Unreal Tournament: Battle of the Castle Bridge

OVERVIEW
MAP WALKTHROUGH

MAPS WALKTHROUGH

The Flag Room has three exits: one connects to the Rocket Launcher Platform; the others connect to the bridge. It makes the flag room easy to invade. However, when players come out to the outer, they must take the risk to go through narrow bridges. The Middle emphasizes close-ranged combat, and it’s the highest part of the map. Thus, survivors from the Outer will face more challenge.

The flag is on a cylinder platform, and the Flag Room has three exits: one connects to the Rocket Launcher Platform, another two connects to the narrow bridges in the outer. It makes Flag Room easy to invade. What’s more, there is an L shaped wall with a Jump Pad blocking most of the doors, which makes defenders hard to predict enemies come from where.
The rocket launcher is on the low platform. The Rocket Launcher Platform is the lowest part of the whole map. When players get the Rocket Launcher, they must go back to Flag Room or forward to the Bridge because this platform doesn’t have a good vision. On the other hand, Players will try to control Flag Room and the opposing high platform to control this powerful weapon.

The Outer is composed of four narrow bridges and a small high platform. These bridges are the critical way to invade the Flag Room. At the same time, the close-mid ranged weapons including Mini Gun and Flak Cannon, and health, and armor are provided to encourage players to fight. Thus, all players have to try to control this area, even though this area is dangerous for them to be attacked from Flag Room and the Middle.
Players can teleport from the teleporter near to the own base to another teleporter, which is on the opposing small high platform. It means even enemies choose to control the Outer, players still have chances to defeat them.

The Middle is an open terrain and focuses on moving player to the Outer.  And It’s the highest part of the map. The bunker and other small obstacles provide covers for players to go through this dangerous area. For the same reason, there are health behind the bunker to help them.
The whole map’s only one powerups point (UDamage) in the center of the Middle. Players must take higher risk to gain greater benefit. For the same reason, there is a tunnel in the mid to make it hard to leave. Once the player gets it, he can make a quick choice to attack or defend.

POST MORTEM

What went well

•    The milestone planning and development schedule
•    The level is fully polished with lighting, decal, sound, and particles to guide players and improve the immersion

What went wrong

•    In the whitebox milestone, the level is unbalanced with the open middle space and the sniper rifle tower in the outer
•    In the playable milestone, the level is lack of a distinct aesthetic theme

What I learned

•    The complete design process from initial ideas, LDD, Whitebox, Aesthetics to RTM phases about level design
•    The basic 3D level design principles
•    Effective communication with instructor and playtesters
•    Technical and creative ability in Unreal 4
